Midi / Mpe Settings

MIDI Learn

MIDI Lean mode lets you map MIDI control change messages from your controller to knobs in ULTRA.

  • Click the MIDI Learn button to enter MIDI lean mode
  • Clicking on a knob makes that knob a target, and draws a yellow circle around it
  • Adjusting the knob on your MIDI controller will make the connection
  • The yellow circle will contain the MIDI CC number for the hardware knob
  • You can only connect one parameter in ULTRA per hardware knob
  • Click the X in the top right to exit MIDI learn mode

Controller Mode: MIDI

MIDI mode is best for a standard MIDI controller.

  • MIDI / MPE switch lets you choose between MPE and MIDI modes.
  • MIDI Channel controls which MIDI channel ULTRA will respond to. By default it will respond to all channels

Controller Mode: MPE

MPE mode is designed for use with an MPE-compatible controller.

When enabled, each note is assigned its own MIDI channel for per-note expression.

  • MIDI / MPE switch
Lets you choose between MPE and standard MIDI modes.
  • Pitch Range
Sets the pitch bend range used by MPE
  • Slide Mode
Controls how MPE Timbre (Slide) messages affect the sound. Timbre response varies between different MPE controllers. In Absolute mode, the value matches the position on the controller. In Relative mode, the value changes relative to the current position when moving the controller
  • Slide CC
Controls which MIDI control change message is used for MPE Timbre
  • MIDI Channels
MIDI Channels sets how many MIDI channels are allocated for MPE note voices
  • Zone
Zone selects whether MPE note channels are assigned above or below the master MIDI channel, depending on your controller configuration

MPE Macro Override

You can connect each of the 3 MPE controller dimensions to the Macro controls.

This allows you to have MPE control over patches that have not been programmed for specific MPE mod sources such as timbre.

When you connect the MPE dimension to a macro, the knob is replaced by a small screen that shows you the MPE value over time.

MPE mod sources

When MPE is enabled, the following changes are made to mod sources:

  • A Timbre mod source is added
  • A Pitch mod source is added, which responds to MPE pitch bend
  • Aftertouch changes from using MIDI aftertouch to MPE pressure / aftertouch

Clicking the small graph on the left of these mod sources brings up an editor which lets you adjust the range and response curve of the Mod source
